Samarkand – the Capital of TamerlaneSamarkand is the second largest city of Uzbekistan and is the same age as Rome and Athens . The history of Samarkand is about 2,500 years old and has witnessed a lot of upheavals during the times of Alexander the Great, the Arabic Conquest, Genghis-Khan Conquest and lastly Tamerlane’s. Ancient Arab manuscripts refer to it as ” Pearl of the East”. The well-known unique architectural monuments of Samarkand have the same value as the masterpieces of India , Egypt , Turkey and Italy .One of this Gur-Emir, the mausoleum of the Timurids, crowned with a large tiled cupola. The bodies of Timur and his grandson Ulugbek- a famous scientist and astronomer are placed here. Among other places of interest there are: the Registan is the central square of ancient Samarkand , which is surrounded with Ulugbek, Shir-Dor and Tillya-Kari Medressehs, Shahi-Zinda ensemble, which is unique in its decoration. A part of the giant sextant in the Ulugbek observatory has been preserved until now and astronomical tables created by Ulugbek are still use all over the world. Samarkand Pictures
